Description:

Pre-Columbian, Brazil, Amazon River Estuary, Marajao Island, ca. 1000 CE. A wonderful gathering of four hand-built pottery drug implements of a petite size with rounded bases, petite zoomorphic heads that double as finger rests, and a conical mouthpiece in front of a deep receptacle. The vessels are presented with faint areas of orange, red, and brown pigment, and the bases are incised with intricate curvilinear motifs. Potent combinations of different hallucinogenic materials were first combined within the receptacle basin and then inhaled - either orally or nasally - to experience vivid visions and spiritual experiences. Size of largest (nearly-closed receptacle): 3.5" L x 2.2" W (8.9 cm x 5.6 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Eugene Lions collection, Switzerland, acquired before 1970
