Description:

North America, United States, Native American, West of Mississippi River in what is now Arkansas, ca. 17th century CE. Quite a rare Quapaw effigy piece! The pottery dipper is elongated in form with a human head and torso emerging from one side, on the opposite side, a handle adorned with an animal head. The human visage dons a peaked cap, ears perforated for spools and a series of raised white dots adorn him and the entire side of the vessel. Shades of red, brown and white pigments made from natural materials ornament the surface in the traditional swirled motif that swathes over the surface. Size: 11-1/2"L x 6-1/2"W x 7-1/2"H.

The Quapaw Mississippians created pottery of great durability and outstanding artistic merit which is especially impressive given that these ancient potters had no benefit of a potter’s wheel or modern kilns to produce their pottery. Archaeologists have suggested that women were the potters of this people. Provenance: Ex-private Galleria Eleni/Weissman Gallery, Chicago.
