Description:

Ancient Near East, Anatolia, Hittite Empire, Middle Kingdom, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A fine pottery jar presenting a narrow, convex base with slanted walls that swell to a bulbous body and broad, round shoulder, surmounted by a corseted cylindrical neck and a flared rim. Thin, horizontal bands of red pigment encircle the shoulder and neck, nicely complementing the buff ground of the exterior while also accentuating the vessel's voluminous form. A graceful example of ancient pottery and impressively intact! Size: 6.1" Diameter x 6.4" H (15.5 cm x 16.3 cm)

Provenance: private Ventura County, California USA collection, acquired 1980s to 1990s

#125050

  • Condition: Convex base creates slight wobble, but vessel can still stand independent of support. Some minor chips to rim and a few stable hairline surface fissures to base, but, otherwise, vessel is intact with a very nice presentation. Rich earthen encrustations to interior and liberal remains of pigment on exterior.
