Description:

Ancient Seas, North America, Western United States, Cretaceous, ca. 83 to 70 million years ago. A superb and aesthetically pleasing fossilized ammonite of the Ancyloceratina variety with an open coil and loose whorl structure. Ancyloceratina are also known as heteromorph or "uncoiled" ammonites, a type of cephalopod that are much rarer than typical solid whorl shell ammonites and irregular or J-shaped open coil specimens found in the same region. This fossil was fully excavated to view from all sides, with the broad chamber tapering to the inner coil, the surface a mottled earthen brown hue with textured ribbing from end to end. This exquisite fossil comes on a custom stand that can easily be removed to examine all aspects of this shell. Size: 5.5" Diameter x 2.25" W x 5" H (14 cm x 5.7 cm x 12.7 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.

The word "ammonite" came from Pliny the Elder who thought these fossils resembled horns, just like the ones the Egyptian ram god, Ammon, was typically depicted wearing. This heteromorph shell could easily be mistaken for a fossilized ram horn!
