Description:

North America, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Pleistocene (Ice Age), ca. 100,000 to 10,000 years ago. An impressive, fossilized molar from a prehistoric woolly mammoth, in a dark umber brown and black hue due to the chemicals and minerals present in the environment as the tooth fossilized! The occlusal surface ridges are present and largely intact, demonstrating their grinding capability to pulverize tough grasses like a corrugated pestle. Mammoth teeth are one of the most complex in the mammal family and the wear and size on these teeth can give a very detailed insight into an individual animal's health and age. Extending below is the root that once anchored this molar to a jaw. Looking at just the size of this tooth, it is easy to imagine how massive these prehistoric mammoths were! Size: 6" L x 3" W x 5" H (15.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 12.7 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) on included custom stand.
