Description:

North Africa, Morocco, Mid-Cretaceous period, ca. 112 to 99.6 million years ago. A superb and aesthetically pleasing fossilized heteromorph ammonite, that was fully excavated- apart from some of the lower shell, to be viewed from nearly all angles! The broad chamber tapering to the inner coil- loose with spacing between the central whorls! Heteromorph or "uncoiled" ammonites are a type of cephalopod that are much more rare than typical solid coil ammonites. The exact species is not determined but these circular varieties are even more rare than the J-shaped open coil specimens found in the same region. This specimen has been prepared fully exposed with a portion of the rock left attached to form a natural base to stand on. Size: 13" L x 5" W x 14.3" H (33 cm x 12.7 cm x 36.3 cm)
