Description:

Northern Europe, Malines, Spanish Netherlands (now Mechelen, Belgium), dated 1581 CE. This is a mortar and pestle, made by Peter Van Den Ghein II (active from 1561 to 1593). His father was also a bronze caster, as were his sons; they were mostly known as bell founders, but many of their mortars still survive. The name and date is written around the exterior rim of the mortar. Mortars of this style were made throughout western Europe, with similar examples coming from Spain, Italy, France, and Germany. Medical practitioners during this time period -- who today we would not recognize as doctors -- would have used mortars like these combined with pestles to make up medicines, many of which did more harm than good. Size: 5" W x 8" H (12.7 cm x 20.3 cm)
