Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. As fine, rare, and important as one can just about ever find in Roman glass. Mold-made deep sky-blue (also known as peacock blue) translucent glass flask with piriform body resting on low, integral foot; gently sloping shoulders that merge imperceptibly into the cylindrical neck with its splayed, in-folded rim. Two double-ribbed handles of cobalt blue glass are applied to the shoulders, then pulled up to attach to the neck just below the rim. This incredible color was achieved through the addition of copper and cobalt into the glass mixture. In the first century CE, blue wares such as this were made predominantly in Rome itself and considered to be fine wares sold only to the most elite of the Roman citizens. Absolutely stunning! Size: 4.5" H (11.4 cm).

Cf. Corning Museum of Glass, inv. 55.1.75, in a different color.
