Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 3rd century CE. One of the most magnificent examples of Roman glass we have seen in some time! Deep purple glass pouring vessel with bulbous body, long thin neck, flared rim and elegant handle sitting on a short foot. A trail of the same color glass is applied to the upper body, pulled up and out, and then attached with a fold to the underside of the rim, creating an elegant handle. The surface has developed a stunning rainbow-colored iridescence that adds to its beauty. Purple glass was rare and most desirable to the Romans and was made by adding manganese to the silicate mixture. Size: 5" H (12.7 cm)

Cf. a light green jug in the Princeton Art Museum, inv. y224.
