Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, La Tolita (sometimes Tumaco) culture, ca. 350 BCE to 350 CE. A hand-built earthenware statuette depicting an anthropomorphic deity or figure having a rather large erect penis. The face is sensitively carved, with wide almond-shaped eyes and ears studded with three piercings each. On the north coast of Ecuador and into Colombia, this culture created sculpture that may be understood as a continuation of the earlier Chorrera style, and is known for its realistic human faces. In this case, of course, the scale of the genitalia is most likely exaggerated. Size: 2.75" L x 2" W x 3.25" H (7 cm x 5.1 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, acquired over twenty years ago
