Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, ca. early 20th century CE. A seated pregnant female figure wearing a huge mask, carved from wood and attached to a sawfish rostrum. The spines of the rostrum are still incredibly sharp! The figure's mask is studded with cowrie shells around the chin and headdress, while the eyes are made of rings of shell or possibly hollow bird bone. Size: 2.6" W x 15.85" H (6.6 cm x 40.3 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection; ex-Ron Perry collection; Ron Perry collected art and artifacts for more than 40 years in New Guinea and the South Pacific. He collaborated with Carolyn Leigh to write a book entitled, "Art Dealer in the Last Unknown: Ron Perry & New Guinea Art: the early years 1964-1972" (2011)
