Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early 20th century CE. A very fine example of a canoe prow shaped like the head of a crocodile with a long snout and a mouthful of sharp, carved teeth. The rugged terrain of Papua New Guinea means that the easiest form of travel for its native indigenous inhabitants is via dugout canoe, especially in the hilly region around the long inland Sepik River. Canoes were highly decorated with symbols of clans and emblems for safety, speed, and success. In the Sepik region, every canoe was carved with a crocodile head prow. Size: 10" W x 33.75" H (25.4 cm x 85.7 cm)
