Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. This squat pot rests on a ring foot, the fins and tail of some marine fish extends from the shoulders, and the raised eyes and mouth groove create an almost cartoonish visage. The surface is slipped in beige with orange, purple, and black pigments on top - the purple hue is indicative of the Macaracas style. The exact species and symbolism are lost over time; perhaps a representation of a stingray, toadfish, or flat angel shark - ready to nibble on unsuspecting toes. In Cocle culture fish were often symbolic of the watery underworld as well as sustenance. Size: 8.5" L x 7" W x 4" H (21.6 cm x 17.8 cm x 10.2 cm)
