Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A graceful vessel comprised of translucent, cobalt blue glass with a mesmerizing swirled pattern integral to the glass - created as the glass was pulled, the vessel's form presenting a rounded bell- or onion-shaped body that bulges ever so slightly just before extending to a long, graceful tubular neck with a splayed lip and folded rim, all upon a concave base. If one peers through the translucent body, one will also see that the interior of the base forms an elegant point rising through the center. The saturated cobalt blue hues are quite striking, and the form presents a marvelous silhouette. Size: 2.75" in diameter x 5.625" H (7 cm x 14.3 cm)

This piece exemplifies the beauty of ancient glass, its sublime form and artistic aesthetic of the caliber that impressed Seneca who marveled in his "Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium" (65 CE) that a glassblower could "by his breath alone, fashion glass into numerous shapes which could scarcely be accomplished by the most skillful hand."
