Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, 900 to 200 BCE. This is a beautiful greenstone pendant, pierced at the head for suspension in a way that mimics eyes; the rest of the pendant shows the long, thin body of an insect with folded wings. The Chavin people lived in the northern Highland Andes, and their capital, Chavin de Huantar, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The artwork of Chavin represents the first widespread style in the Andes; depictions of animals of all kinds were common with their artisans. All proceeds from this piece go for benefit of 6 animal charities in Taos, NM. Size: 3.55" L x 0.7" W (9 cm x 1.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Private K. Holkza collection via family descent from her sister, acquired in NYC before 1975
