Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero Mezcala, ca. 300 BCE. Skillfully string-cut and finely carved from a mottled greenstone of deep forest green hues, this Mezcala standing figure appears to be of the M-20 type given its morphological affinity with the Chontal tradition. While the face is comprised of flat planes consistent with the Mezcala style, the sculptor's efforts to create a more naturalistic nose is akin to the Chontal approach. This long nose is somewhat unique to the M-20 type, making it stand apart from most Mezcala figures. The differentiation of the arms from the torso on both the front and back is also similar to the Chontal tradition, though these are pecked rather than filed. A wonderful and relatively rare example. Custom stand. Size: 2.125" W x 5.5" H (5.4 cm x 14 cm)
