Description:

**Previously listed at 300**

Pre-Columbian, Chancay, modern day Peru, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A polychrome standing human figure, with incised lines marking out fingers, toes, necklace, and bracelet. Red and black painted details on the face may replicate tattoo patterns or ritual scarification. Many Chancay figures are shown with their arms thrown out to the side, whereas this one has its hands placed on its stomach. Chancay ceramics have been found mainly in the cemeteries of the Ancon and Chancay valleys; this pottery seems to have been produced on a large scale using molds. Their pottery would start with a rough matte surface that would be painted later in contrasting cream, red, and black. These were placed in a funerary context for reasons unknown. Intriguingly, this example has a hole pierced all the way through the body from its upper arms. Size: 5.2" W x 9.1" H (13.2 cm x 23.1 cm)
