Pre-Columbian, Chancay, Peru, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A fine heavy slab figure with very well-preserved decoration, this is probably a depiction of a woman, standing, with her hands clasped over her belly, wearing some kind of loincloth-like outfit incised onto her body. Her face is striking, almost entirely black aside from a small triangle around her nose and her eyes. This may represent a tattoo. She wears large spooled earrings. The unpainted body, in contrast to the painted face, gives the idea that she may once have been decorated with perishable clothing - textiles, feathers, or some other items. Chancay ceramics have been found mainly in the cemeteries of the Ancon and Chancay valleys; this pottery seems to have been produced on a large scale using molds and used as grave furniture.
