Pre-Columbian, Chancay, modern day Peru, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A hollow pottery figure in the cuchimilco form, sometimes called a guardian figure. It is a man with his arms outstretched, wide eyes, a pointed chin, and a huge forehead/upper head; he has a prominent, erect phallus and a well-built upper body with large pectoral muscles. He stands on large, flat feet; there are piercings along the top of his headdress. Chancay ceramics have been found mainly in the cemeteries of the Ancon and Chancay valleys; this pottery seems to have been produced on a large scale using molds. Their pottery would start with a rough matte surface that would be painted later in contrasting cream, brown, and black. Male figures like this one are rare.
