Description:

Native American, Midwestern to Eastern United States, Woodlands, Early Archaic Period, ca. 7000 to 5000 BCE. A hand-pecked axe head or hand axe of a double headed form, and a smooth groove that encircles the entire circumference, hence the designation: "full groove axe head." The groove enabled the head to be bound to the end of a wooden pole for use a chopping tool or hammer via the butt end. Full grooved axe heads preceded the "three quarter" grooved heads and are usually dated to the early Archaic period. Size: 5" L x 2.75" W (12.7 cm x 7 cm)
