Description:

Northern Europe, probably England, Northern France, or Scandinavia, Saxon, ca. 7th century CE. A beautiful scabbard button adornment of ovoid form that is comprised of a smooth, hand-carved garnet within a 96.05% gold setting. Displaying hues of crimson, burgundy, maroon, and fuchsia, the garnet features a planar top face that is encircled by a rounded periphery that slopes gradually until its sides are covered with folded bezel walls. The lower periphery of the gold setting is decorated with a rope cord border displayed with petite segmentations, and the underside shows a pair of perforations for bronze pins to fit through; one is still present and visible. Buttons like this example were opulent adornments for sheaths and sword handles of ancient Saxon warriors and were perhaps a visible form of currency meant for trade or bartering in certain situations. Size (setting): 0.71" L x 0.54" W (1.8 cm x 1.4 cm); (garnet): 0.55" L x 0.39" W (1.4 cm x 1 cm); gold quality: 96.05% (equivalent to 22K+); weight: 4.8 grams
