Description:

Western Europe, Victorian era, ca. 19th century CE. This is a fine carnelian intaglio set into a gold bezel as a wearable signet ring that displays a detailed coat of arms. The stone is engraved with heraldic emblem that contains a shield with a fess band across the center with three stars, and two birds above the fess and one below. Above is a leopard head to the right, with perhaps a broken spear through its heart, and scrolling banners and foliate vines surround the escutcheon. The ovoid bezel is supported by a split shoulder shank and a grooved band with a flattened interior. Intaglio rings could be used to create personal mark for imprinting in wax seals on important documents, and coats of arms were symbols of hereditary status that distinguished nobility from the peasantry, an ornate visual symbol of rank. Size (intaglio face): 0.88" L x 0.75" W (2.2 cm x 1.9 cm); (band opening): 0.7" Diameter (1.8 cm); gold quality: 43.13% (equivalent to 10K+); weight: 6.1 grams; US ring size: 7.25
