Description:

South Asia, Northeastern India, Rajasthan, ca. 11th to 12th century CE. An exquisite sandstone stele intricately carved to depict a nude Neminatha, the 22nd Jina in Jainism, standing atop a pedestal with lions crouched beneath him. Flanking him are attendants, while celestial beings, elephants, and a sinuous mythical yali beast appear above and slightly set behind. Known for his deep compassion for animals, Neminatha embodies the Jain principles of strict vegetarianism and non-violence toward all living beings. A conch shell chakra is carved on his chest - a symbol also associated with Krishna, who is considered Neminatha's cousin and contemporary. According to legend, Neminatha blew Krishna's mighty conch, Panchajanya, a feat said to be possible only for Krishna himself. Neminatha is the twenty-second of twenty-four Tirthankaras, revered spiritual teachers in Jainism who draw significant devotional worship. Size: 7.5" L x 5.5" W x 25" H (19 cm x 14 cm x 63.5 cm); 27.3" H (69.3 cm) on included custom stand.
