Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Northern India, Gandhara / Kushan Empire, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A superb gray schist statue of the Bodhisattva Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future, standing atop a plinth decorated with flowers. His head is carved with naturalistic features and carefully arranged hair, backed by a circular halo. The serene deity is draped in a full-length sanghati, finely carved with folds flowing over his neck, wrists, and down to his ankles. Gandharan sculpture became famous for the blend of Greco-Roman realism and Buddhist symbolism that is captured by this figure. A unique Indo-Greek culture arose after Alexander the Great's conquest of Central Asia during the 3rd century BCE, and Hellenistic art continued to strongly influence the region and was sustained by the syncretic Kushan Empire well into the 4th century! Size: 5.25" L x 3.5" W x 17" H (13.3 cm x 8.9 cm x 43.2 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private collection of a London gentleman, acquired in France in the early 2000s; ex-private European collection from the 1970s
