Description:

Magna Graecia, Asia Minor, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A skillfully carved marble head of a youthful female, perhaps a Maenad, wearing a fillet across her brow, her hair wrapped in a sphendome, a tendril of curls at either ear, each ear pierced. So stunning, she is depicted with delicate facial features and a wavy coiffure pulled back to a low chignon. Truly life-like, despite her possible mythical status, this naturalistic visage demonstrates that the sculptor was virtuosic in his ability to bring marble to life! Custom stand. Size: 5.125" H (13 cm); 8.875" H (22.5 cm) on stand

In ancient Greece, the Maenads were the most important members of Dionysus's retinue; their Roman equivalent was the female entourage of Bacchus, the Bacchantes, who are often shown wearing fawn skin and cavorting drunkenly with various beasts of the forest.
