Egypt, Ptolemaic period, ca. 305 to 30 BCE. A wonderful pottery head of a male Nubian presenting a heavy brow, recessed eyes, a round nose, and an open mouth, all crowned by a thick, curly coiffure. The Nubians and the Romans (as well as Egyptians) had a complex relationship, and Nubians were frequent subjects of Roman artwork, likely intended to represent the exotic. Size: 1.6" L x 1.4" W x 2" H (4.1 cm x 3.6 cm x 5.1 cm); 3.75" H (9.5 cm) on included custom stand.
Exhibited in the Lily Place Collection, Minneapolis Institute of Art, from 1928 to 1958, ref. no. 28.24.162; and in the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA), California State University, San Bernardino from 1996 to 2023, reference number EL01.178.1996.
