Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A hand-carved wooden sarcophagus bearing the likeness of a falcon standing in mummiform atop an integral plinth, perhaps a portrayal of either the god Sokar or the funerary deity Qebehsenuef. Carved atop the lid is a characteristic falcon head bearing a petite beak, ovoid eyes, and a heart-shaped face framed within a pair of thick headdress lappets. Remains of white a black pigment are visible in scattered areas across the lid while the back presents a thick, undecorated dorsal pillar. The interior cavity is large enough to have contained a mummified falcon at one time, however such an example is not present with this sarcophagus. Size: 6.5" L x 7" W x 20.625" H (16.5 cm x 17.8 cm x 52.4 cm)
