Western Europe, Italy, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fine pottery tile of rectangular form, depicting the Holy Family - Jesus, Mary, and Joseph - all delineated in vibrant glazes of lemon yellow, lime green, cobalt, sky blue, russet brown, tan, black, and beige hues. The endearing scene features the crowned Virgin Mary wearing a voluminous robe and draped in her traditional blue veil as she holds a nude Christ child with a prominent halo. Lying semi-recumbent, the divine infant reaches toward his mother's face with his right hand. His earthly father, Saint Joseph, peaks out from the left shoulder of the Madonna, gazing in awe at his heavenly son. Size: 10.6" W x 13.4" H (26.9 cm x 34 cm)
