Description:

Native American, North America, New Mexico, ca. 1-500 CE. Hand woven sandals made from leaves of the desert yucca plant. Yucca leaves were used either whole, split or separated. Sometimes they were shredded and spun into cordage. Most often the yucca was woven into the sandal's sole. In this example, even the sole is comprised of woven yucca. Ties and loops were added to secure the sandal to the wearer's feet. The fine interlacing exemplified here demonstrates the Anasazi weavers' genius as textile artists. Anasazi sandals changed in shape over the years. The early examples had square heels as we see in this pair. Given their size, most likely created for a woman. Each is approximately 8-1/2"L x 4-1/4"W at widest point, though they are not exactly the same sizes as they were made by hand. Provenance: Ex-private El Cajon, CA acquired in the 1960s. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
