Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; Central & Gulf Coast Mexico, Veracruz region, Aztec culture, Post Classic period, ca. 1200 to 1521 CE. Two West Mexican stone labrets or lip plugs one made of jet-black obsidian and the other of quartz. The matching ear spools are made from pottery and covered in a black slip. The luster of the blackware surface is similar to the glassy obsidian stone, which was a prized stone and material of wealth and status. These spools and labrets are a beautiful gathering of ancient jewelry that demonstrated prestige! Size of earspools: 1" Diameter x 0.65" W (2.5 cm x 1.7 cm)
