Mexico, Michoacan, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This burnished clay female figure is wearing a headdress, elaborate hairstyle, large ear spools, and a necklace. Breasts and exaggerated stomach, hips, and thighs all emphasize her fertility. Her prominent nose is classic of the period. A small figure such as this would have been a grave good placed into a shaft tomb; this practice was so common in west Mexico at the time that the cultural tradition for this period is known as the shaft tomb culture. Custom stand included. Size: figure itself measures 5-1/4" x 1-1/2" at its widest point; 5-1/2"x 1-1/2" on stand.
