Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca culture, ca. 1430-1530. The Incas were highly regarded for their textiles which were influenced by works of the pre-Inca Chimu culture. Cloth and textiles reflected societal class. Llama wool was used in more common clothing and finer pieces were woven from alpaca or vicuna wool. These were reserved for royal and religious use. In addition, specific designs indicated a person's status and nobility. Beyond this symbolic function, textiles were widely prized because they were manufactured for tax collection purposes and the trade. Hence, they played a critical role in the Andean economic system. The composition of this particular example presents an overall step pattern with intricate geometric designs woven within, all in golden hues and deep red/pink highlights. 13-3/4"W x 15"L Provenance: Ex-private South Denver, CO collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
