Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southwest Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 350 BCE - 250 CE. The Mezcala used string-cut technology to carve impressive figurines such as this example. Mezcala sculpture features abstract representations of the human body. Facial features are suggested by lines and textural contrasts. It is thought that the Mezcala artists were influenced by the Olmecs. The Mezcala in turn would later influence the artisans of Teotihuacan in the valley of Mexico. What's fascinating about Mezcala figures is just how "modern" their aesthetic was. Indeed, the history of art began with abstraction. Of course, naturalistic representation would become the norm during the Renaissance. It would not be until the 20th century that we would see such abstraction once again! 2-3/4"L Ex-Knox Collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
