Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; Nayarit, San Sebastian Red type, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A pair of hand-built pottery funerary figures of abstract forms - one a flat Colima slab-like figure with a minimalistic face and body, and a hollow seated Nayarit San Sebastian type. These figures would have been placed into a shaft tomb; figurines that faced outward around the perimeter of graves inside of shaft tombs are a hallmark of the elusive early West Mexican cultures in Jalisco and neighboring Nayarit and Colima. Size of San Sebastian figure: 3.75" L x 3.5" W x 7.5" H (9.5 cm x 8.9 cm x 19 cm)

Provenance: Barakat Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA acquired before 2000
