Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, probably Nicoya, 1st millennium BCE to 700 CE. This is a beautiful necklace made from dark green/brown beads interspersed with five carved figures in varying shades of green. Jade was incredibly valuable in the pre-Columbian world. Two of the jade carved figures are in the very early Nicoya style -- a celt-shape carved into a beaked bird figure. Two others are small celt shapes with slight embellishment. The centerpiece of the necklace is an anthropomorphic "Axe God", also in the shape of a celt but carved with a two-dimensional, very low relief design. It shows an abstract humanoid figure with hands joined across its chest and a round headdress. Size: 23" L (58.4 cm).
