Pre-Columbia, Colombia, La Tolita, Tumaco, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. Effigy graters (rollador) were utilized in the Tumaco region of what is now Colombia, by the Tolita culture, from approximately 500BCE to 500CE, usually taking the stylized form of a fish or squid. Used to grate various vegetables, they were made with raised horizontal sections, and in this case, also had inset sharp stones. This very fine example shows liberal remains of original red pigment. Custom stand. Size: 12" W.

Provenance: Ex-private Aguirre collection, acquired in 1970's.
