Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Bahia, ca. 300 BCE - 500 CE. Somewhat crude in its technique yet intriguing for its iconography, this vessel is supported by or possibly emerges from a genderless figure. The figure is on its back and is depicted with just enough anatomical detail to define it as human. A head adorned with an incised coiffure and large ear ornaments with a simple yet expressive visage. Short and chubby limbs painted with red slip grasp the body of the vessel that is also painted red. All is further adorned with incised lines highlighted with white slip to delineate the human figure, and on the opposing side of the vessel, geometric net-like markings inscribed in three triangular panels. A charming piece! 4.75"W x 4.25"H (12.07 W x 10.80 H cm) Provenance: Ex-I.M. Chait Gallery, Beverly Hills.
