Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manab? Province, Jama Coaque culture, ca 300 - 600 CE. The Jama Coaque culture of the Pacific coast of Ecuador is known for its pottery, especially figural works adorned with appliqu?s and painted with pigment. This bottle or vase is adorned with two figures that appear to project from the vessel. Their arms rest on the surface as they look upward toward the offering placed in the vase. Both figures are ornately decorated with fanciful headdresses, ear ornaments, nose rings, pectorals, and wrist cuffs. The vessel itself is a lovely discoid form with triangular cut-outs enhancing its lower edge and a narrow, elegantly turned spout. The underside shows rich red coloration and attractive firing clouds. Given the elaborate decorative program of the piece, it was most likely used during ritualistic ceremonies. 3.63"W x 8.75"H (9.21 W x 22.23 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
