Japan, Edo to Meiji Period, ca. 1860 to 1900 CE. A fine pair of Japanese Emperor and Empress dolls, or kokin-bina, presented in formal court dress. Both sit upon decorated "books" made of silks and rattan. She is dressed in many layers of robes, with applied gold thread, large crown upon her head. He looks dignified with long beard and mustache, hands held together. Size: 11"H included base.
