South India, Tamil, ca. 19th century CE. High karat gold (over 22K) earrings representing a complex form of juxtaposed squares, rectangles and triangles with a small snake or bird-like face. They are made of sheet gold filled with lac and are meant to represent an egg-laying cobra. Extensive iconography exists regarding these works and would have been given to daughters by their parents before marriage of prestige and as a symbol of fertility. Examples can be found in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, NY, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and Barbier-Mueller Museum, Geneva, Switzerland. 27.5 grams.
