Description:

Eastern Europe / Western Asia, Black Sea area, Pontic Greek or Scythian, ca. 500 BCE. A cast bronze spear point of elegant form. A narrow, cylindrical socket tapers almost unnoticeably to meet the body of the blade, which is long and leaf-shaped. Around the socket, the blade flattens, forming two shallow grooves on each of its face, one on either side of the socket. Size: 1.3" W x 11.4" H (3.3 cm x 29 cm)

Pontic Greek and Scythian burials both included bronze spear points, often in great number, to mark the graves of warriors, who could be either male or female. Metalsmiths in the Steppes region and around the Black Sea and Aral Sea made socketed bronze spear heads and arrowheads from ca. 2000 BCE, but it is unclear when they became adapted to warfare rather than just being used to signify social status. These warriors of the steppes used chariots to have a protected platform from which they could throw a spear.
