Description:

Central Europe, southwestern France to the Iberian Peninsula, Visigoth, Migration Period, Dark Ages, ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A leaf-shaped two-part 24K gold belt buckle with a moveable prong and attachment holes as well as a strap plate section. Both sections are engraved with curvilinear motifs and adorned with red pigment. An extraordinary luxury item, created during a period of immense social unrest when it was wise to wear your treasures on your person. This piece may have been used for a baldric or as a helmet fastener. Regardless, a buckle like this was most certainly intended to be a visual sign of wealth, status, and rank. Size: 3" H (7.6 cm); 3.625" H (9.2 cm) on included custom stand. Weight: 14.8 grams

The Visigoths were among the most significant German peoples. Belonging to the Goths, they separated from the Ostrogoths in the 4th century CE and relentlessly raided Roman territories establishing kingdoms in Gaul and Spain.
