Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River District, Shortmeri Village, ca. early 20th century. Wooden dance board finely carved with bird finial in high relief, a FoxBat head with inlaid cowrie shell eyes on the lower terminus, and an ancestral visage also with inlaid cowrie shell eyes in the center. Adorned with red and white earth pigments. Background further decorated with incised swirl patterns. Measures 59" (~150 cm) long. Provenance: Ex-B. Pickard private collection, Oklahoma City, OK; Ex-Ron L. Perry collection, collected in situ by Mr. Perry in 1960s. Mr. Perry was a cartographer who surveyed Papua New Guinea before it attained nationhood. Works from his collection have been featured in major museum exhibitions. Mr. Perry is also the author of a book entitled "Art Dealer in the Last Unknown" (2011).
