Papua New Guinea, Middle Ramu and Upper Keram Rivers Basin, near Guam River entry, Misingi Village, Romkun culture, ca. mid-20th century. A male initiation figure with opposed hooks framing stylized visage atop a slender body. Throughout Papua New Guinea, a number of peoples worked in what is known as the opposed-hooks style to adorn sacred figures, in which curved and pointed hooks are arranged on a vertical axis around a central design element. This is a noble example in wonderful condition! 52" (~132 cm) tall. Provenance: Ex-B. Pickard private collection, Oklahoma City, OK; Ex-Ron L. Perry collection, collected in situ by Mr. Perry in 1960s. Mr. Perry was a cartographer who surveyed Papua New Guinea before it attained nationhood. Works from his collection have been featured in major museum exhibitions. Mr. Perry is also the author of a book entitled "Art Dealer in the Last Unknown" (2011).
