Description:

Classical World, Eastern Mediterranean, Phoenician, ca. 6th to 1st century BCE. A fabulous strand of ancient glass, shell, carnelian, and faience beads strung on modern thread as a necklace. There are over 100 ancient beads in this collection and they vary in shape from discoid, tubular, to rounded. The central pendant bead is a lovely semi-translucent orange carnelian with a rectangular shape. The other beads are a variety of colors: deep blue, yellow, umber, turquoise, pink, and white. A few of the smaller glass beads have developed some rainbow iridescence on their surface. Size necklace: 17.75" L (45.1 cm); largest bead: .75" L x .31" W (1.9 cm x 0.8 cm)

  • Condition: All beads are ancient, but strung in modern times on modern thread to be wearable. Chips, nicks, and losses and some stable hairline fissures. Age commensurate surface weathering and mineral deposits. These could be restrung and outfitted with a clasp.
