Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast-bronze furniture leg of a miniscule size, perhaps meant to support one side of a vessel stand or a decorative item. The petite accessory features the body of a swan - with plump breast, outstretched wings, and neck craned over its right shoulder - with its normal legs replaced by a singular, massive leonine leg. A shallow indentation behind the swan shows where an item or stand component would be placed for balance and presentation. Size: 1.55" W x 1.8" H (3.9 cm x 4.6 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California collection, USA, bestowed 2006; ex-J. Malter collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired before 2006
