Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A large ceramic pouring vessel. The body is gourd-shaped, with a small round foot. The neck is huge, almost dominating the piece, a broad cone terminating in a wide, flat rim. A thin, tapering spout rises from one side of the body to join the side of the rim. Size: 9" W x 11.05" H (22.9 cm x 28.1 cm)

The gourd body is painted a rich, deep red mirrored by the rim and top of the spout. The neck and central portion of the spout (which also serves as a handle) has cream and black/deep purple geometric motifs. Geometric design elements such as these were imbued with powerful symbolism, often relating to shamanism, although the cognitive intent of these has largely been forgotten or is no longer known.
