Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 750 to 1000 CE. A burnished black stirrup vessel with a spout and a three-tiered body. The body is shaped like the steps of a pyramid, with three figures seated, arms wide and hanging over their knees, on the steps. The figures appear to be human but may also be monkeys. The Lambayeque were a wealthy society who reveled in creating ornate items that showcased that wealth; ornate black pottery like this was mold-made and mass produced but may also have been copies of silver vessels that would have been owned by very wealthy individuals. Size: 4" L x 4.5" W x 7.6" H (10.2 cm x 11.4 cm x 19.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Americas Artifacts, Roswell, GA, USA; Ex-Private Georgia Collection; Ex-William and Carol Thibadeau, acquired 1960s through 1980s
