Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Two carefully crafted 18K gold earrings, each made from a gold wire looped down to join two slightly flaring pieces of sheet gold that are shaped like a waxing moon turned on its side. Each has a tiny opening on one side of the wire loop for wearing, but would require a jeweler to add a modern finding to become wearable today. Roman women - especially of the upper classes - had their ears pierced and wore one set of earrings. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit. Size: .6875" L x .5" W (1.7 cm x 1.3 cm); 4.5 grams for the pair
