Description:

Eastern Europe / Central Asia, Russia, Perm region, Perm Animal Style (Permian Animal Style), Proto-Viking, ca. 8th to 9th century CE. A beautiful and well-preserved group of white bronze (a copper alloy with a high percentage of tin) pendants, perhaps made to be attached to a belt or a saddle. Each pendant takes the form of an abstract avian figure, one having a petite head and hemispherical body with impressed stippled motifs, the other with an elongated neck, zigzag body pattern, and projecting tail section. The larger pendant displays several broken suspension loops on the underside for attaching slender chains and ornamentation, and the smaller pendant has a single perforation along its spine. A fantastic ensemble! Size of largest (projecting tail): 1.375" L (3.5 cm).

  • Condition: Both pendants have expected age-commensurate surface wear and roughness, losses to some or all suspension loops, light tarnishing, and fading to designs, otherwise very good. Both have light earthen deposits throughout, and largest displays lovely green patina in some areas.
